Ground source heat pumps are the most common for residential homes. These use loops or coils of tubing in the ground to maintain a preset temprature in your house. This works both as heating in the winter and cooling in the summer. There are several ground designs to choose from, vertical loop and horizontal loop which are both closed looped systems. The other more uncommon are open loop systems, these use ground water or a body of water to regulate temperature, basically cycling water through these bodies of water. It can provide better efficiency or for larger applications because of the better heat transfer properties.
